Sucralfate is expected to treat diabetes

Recently, a new study by Harvard University in the United Kingdom's "Natural Materials" magazine found that an old drug for the treatment of gastric ulcer, sucralfate, can also be used to treat diabetes and provide a new way for the treatment of obesity.

In the new study, scientists at Harvard Medical School hope to develop a risk-free drug that will form a coating in the intestine, so sucralfate is the first choice. Sucralfate has been used for the treatment of gastric ulcer for more than 40 years. It forms a paste after entering the stomach, forming a "coating" at the ulcer to protect the tissue from further damage and promote ulcer healing.

Scientists put sucralfate powder into a special capsule, which is taken before meals and is called "surgical pills" because the weight loss of the drug is comparable to surgery. The purpose of this pill is to let it enter the intestine and then release the sucralfate to form a coating on the inner wall of the small intestine, relieve digestive enzyme activity, and reduce the body's absorption of fat, sugar and nutrients in food. Scientists have also changed the drug in the laboratory to make it positively charged. Due to the electrostatic interaction, once the new drug enters the intestine, the positively charged molecules are attracted by the negatively charged receptors in the intestine, causing the drug to stick to the intestinal wall. After a few hours, this electrical bond will gradually weaken and the coating will gradually ablate.

The researchers found in rats with diabetes that blood glucose levels were reduced by 47% in rats given new drugs compared with untreated rats. Researchers are conducting more animal experiments to understand the long-term effects of the drug on weight loss and diabetes. â–²
