Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history. Modern Chinese medicine combines modern medicine with traditional Chinese medicine therapy, and has great potential in the field of disease treatment, medicine and health care product research and development. Traditional Chinese medicine related products are an important part of the pharmaceutical industry in East Asia. The global influence has increased year by year, and the annual sales of pharmaceutical products and health products exceed US$60 billion. However, due to the variety of Chinese herbal medicines as raw materials and the lack of stable and consistent chemical composition, it is still an arduous task to ensure the safety and effectiveness of related products. Recently, Illumina signed an agreement with the Institute of Medicinal Plants of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMPLAD) to launch a thousand medicinal plant genome project (1KMPG) to jointly create the world's first medicinal plant reference gene pool. The establishment of the reference gene pool will be divided into two phases: the first phase, the reference gene pool for 500 medicinal plants will be established through Illumina's Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platform; the second phase, after the last round of results evaluation, IMPLAD and Illumina negotiated a renewal agreement to carry out the sequencing of the remaining 500 medicinal plants to jointly complete the Thousand Medicinal Plant Genome Project (1KMPG). Professor Sun Xiaobo, director of the Institute of Medicinal Plants of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, said: "Illumina's NGS technology will allow researchers to obtain complete chloroplast genome sequences from commonly used medicinal plants, while also helping us distinguish between those that were previously difficult to distinguish. Similar species. We expect this approach to be incorporated into the future update of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia." The Institute of Medicinal Plants of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences will collect and annotate all plant species included in the 2015 Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and Illumina will sequence all DNA samples. The Phytoplankton Institute then assembled and annotated the chloroplast genome with the assistance of Illumina. The project will be completed through the 1KMPG International Alliance (prepared for construction), and Professor Liu Wei of the Institute of Medicinal Plants of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences is the Alliance Liaison. Alliance members establish and maintain live specimens/seed stocks of more than 5,000 medicinal plants, using industry-leading technologies to promote genomic plant sequencing and accurate identification.
