Wearable cameras let blind people walk like normal people

Release date: 2015-04-02

At this stage of technological so advanced, we should indeed bring some gospel to the vast majority of visually impaired people around the world. Especially for those cases where the optic nerve system is intact but the external tissue is damaged, the risk of travel is particularly high, because they are completely unable to know the obstacles that are coming on the road.

Now scientists from the Massachusetts Eye and Eye Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School and the Schepens Institute have jointly launched a "blind wearable camera" that is pocket-sized and placed on the wearer's chest. It is sure to help this group of optic nerves. People avoid obstacles and blockages during walking.

Its working process is like this: when it detects an obstacle that the wearer is likely to hit, the device will give an early warning; in addition, it can distinguish between "collision" and "passing with obstacles" Make a difference and make a reasonable and effective alert.

The researchers convened 25 patients with narrow vision and hemianopia to participate in equipment testing. Each patient of the wearer's instrument was asked to walk on a 41-meter-long circular test road with a random oncoming "passer" and 46 fixed ground obstacles. The researchers' final data is that after wearing this instrument, patients with impaired vision can increase the probability of avoiding obstacles by 37% while maintaining the pace of walking.

But this is not the first smart device to help visually impaired people. As early as 2009, scientists have developed a prototype system that converts road scenes into three-dimensional auditory images through the wearer's head-mounted camera, and detects obstacles in the front path through sonar technology, using tactile feedback. It acts as a reminder of obstacles on the wearer's wrist. Moreover, products such as “Blind Walking Cane” have appeared on the market. It synchronizes with the mobile phone via Bluetooth and acts as a sensor to give the blind person a road surface prompt. In addition, robot navigation assistants like navigation dogs have appeared on the market.

Now scientists in Massachusetts are planning to promote the technology of the "pocket device" with the public. They also published research results in the authoritative journal "Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science".
