Recently, researchers from the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory CSAIL, the University of Sheffield, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology have jointly developed a folding robot made of pig large intestine. Controlled by external magnetic forces, the folding robot moves through the simulated human esophagus and stomach and can be used to remove button cells that are swallowed, repair wounds, and target medications.

The folding robot presented at this month's International Robotics and Automation Conference was developed on the basis of a series of folding robots developed by CSAIL director Daniela Rus, MIT electrical engineering and computer science professors Andrew and Erna Viterbi.

Rus said: "It's really exciting to see the folding robot we're doing can do something that is potentially helpful for medical health. For applications that can enter the human body, we need small, controllable, no Chain-tracting robotic system. If the robot needs to be tied with a rope, it is really difficult to control."

Team composition

The team working with Rus to develop folding robots is a postdoctoral fellow at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and is also an electronics lecturer at the University of York, Shuhei Miyashita; a mechanical engineering graduate student, Steven Guitron; a postdoctoral fellow at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory; Shuguang Li; Tokyo Institute of Technology Kazuhiro Yoshida was visiting at MIT; Dana Damian of the University of Sheffield, UK.
