"At present, China's medical device industry market is about 400 billion yuan, and it is increasing at a rate of 20% per year. It is a veritable sunrise industry." The conference, entitled "Technology for Health", was held in Beijing from May 26th to 31st. Top experts, scholars and medical device companies from the biomedical engineering community from more than 80 countries and regions were invited to participate.

Professor Fan Yubo said that at present, more than 70% of high-end medical devices in China rely on imports, and high-end knee joints and pacemakers are almost 100% dependent on imports.

"We have not completely said goodbye to the history of 'a syringe with a nuclear magnetic resonance instrument', import high-end equipment, and export low-end products. But it should be noted that with the efforts in recent years, the import and export structure of medical equipment in China is being optimized. More and more mid-range products have joined the ranks of exporters." Fan Yubo said.

"More and more universities in China have established this major. Because of the need to closely follow the frontiers of biology, chemistry, materials and other disciplines, professional talent training is an urgent task." Fan Yubo said.
