Salt-tolerant new rice lines show excellent performance

The salt-tolerant new rice line developed by experts from Hainan and Hunan provinces has made significant progress in the field pilot test at Yantan in Yancheng, Jiangsu. The salt-tolerant rice is planted on a 0.3% salt-tolerant beach and its yield per mu reaches 400 kg, which is at the advanced level of similar research at home and abroad.

Experts said that the success of the new salt-tolerant rice field pilot planting test has taken an important step for the cultivation of new salt-tolerant rice varieties and the use of large-area salt flats to grow food crops.

At Yanhai Jinhai Farm in Yancheng, Jiangsu, where 50 acres of salt is divided into 0.3% of salt flats, 16 types of salt-tolerant rice lines (or varieties) from all over the country have matured one after another, showing stubborn vitality under harsh conditions of salt stress. Among them, the three strains obtained from the study of Lin Qifeng, Professor Li Guanyi of Hainan University and the Rice Research Institute of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences performed well for 6 years, and “Haixiang 030” had the best salt tolerance and even growth.

Experts pointed out that the general salt tolerance of rice is 0.06% -0.1%, Haixiang 030, etc. in the salt 0.3% -0.4% along the beach with excellent performance.

According to experts, at present, 1/4 to 1/3 of the land in the world is saline soil, and about 20% of the cultivated land and nearly half of the irrigated land are affected by salinization in varying degrees. The acceleration of the cultivation and promotion of salt-tolerant rice and other salt-tolerant crops, the development of large-area salt-waste lands and tidal flats, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural development have important strategic significance in expanding human living space.
