Perhaps the growth environment and experience of childhood have a greater impact on boys' growth than people think. Recently, British researchers found that Bangladeshi boys who grew up in the UK entered puberty earlier than boys who grew up in Bangladesh. They had higher testosterone and higher height in adulthood. These differences may be due to some environmental factors encountered during childhood, such as exposure to infectious diseases.

Male reproductive investment is considered a high energy investment, reflected in testosterone levels, puberty development time and height, and is related to the local environment. However, it is not clear whether male reproductive investment depends on the development of childhood, whether it is regulated in adulthood, and whether it varies from ethnic group to ethnic group.

Kesson Magid of the University of Durham in the UK and colleagues studied a group of Bangladeshi men who moved to the UK during their childhood and found that these immigrant men were at least taller than those of British European men who lived in the UK for a lifetime and had similar socioeconomic status. This is equivalent, but saliva testosterone levels are higher; not only that, the difference between men who immigrated before the age of 8 and those who stayed in Bangladesh is the largest, and men who migrated from Bangladesh to the UK after adulthood have the lowest levels of testosterone. Related papers were recently published online in Nature-Ecology and Evolution.

Researchers have suggested that reproductive investment is a "compromise" to other energy-consuming processes in childhood (such as resistance to infection). This result is similar to previous studies on pubertal initiation and reproductive hormone levels in immigrant women. These studies have found or helped to understand changes in pubertal initiation time and hormone-related diseases in the context of increasing global population affluence and nutritional levels.
