Duke University physicists have developed a technique that produces precise sharp jets that make it possible to inject matter into a single living cell. This technique can inject a drug into a single cell each time, which is very valuable for stem cell and other cell-level studies. The study was published in the journal Physical Review Letters.
Scientists create jets by focusing the laser around the target cells. The laser will heat to achieve a blue dye dissolved in the solution, which will create a bubble that will rapidly expand and collapse, and when such bubbles are produced separately, it will cause a shock wave propagating in the liquid. But when two bubbles are produced at the same time, it quickly triggers a thin and powerful jet that can punch holes of only 0.2 microns on the cell membrane.
By examining the blue dye in the cells that were broken down, the researchers confirmed that the jet did indeed allow the liquid to enter the cell. The dye used in this experiment is toxic, it kills the broken cells, but the pores caused by the jet are really very small. Therefore, this technique will likely provide a means of injecting non-toxic substances into living cells without causing too much damage.
