Germany breeds new flaxseed containing polyunsaturated fatty acids

German scientists recently used GM technology to cultivate flaxseed containing polyunsaturated fatty acids for the first time so that people can consume it without eating fish. Studies have shown that polyunsaturated fatty acids can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in humans and are abundant in fish, but none of them are found in plants. However, flaxseed, rapeseed oil, soybeans, and walnuts contain substances that can be converted to polyunsaturated fatty acids. A team of German scientists announced that they introduced three genes in flax and successfully cultivated flaxseed containing polyunsaturated fatty acids. One tablespoon of this genetically modified linseed oil has almost been able to meet the body's normal demand for polyunsaturated fatty acids within 1 day.
