Parkinson's disease is often considered a brain disease, but animal studies published in the new issue of Cell, by US researchers, suggest that this common neurodegenerative disease may be associated with microbial changes in the gut. This discovery may lead to a new treatment strategy for Parkinson's disease.

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology first developed two groups of experimental mice that produced excessive alpha-synuclein, one of the "culprits" of Parkinson's disease. The only difference between the two groups of rats was that one group had a complete intestinal flora and the other group was a sterile experimental mouse. As a result, it was found that the sterile test rats not only showed no symptoms of Parkinson's disease, but also performed much better in exercise performance tests such as running and climbing.

The researchers then fed a portion of the sterile mice to the short-chain fatty acids produced by the intestinal flora to break down the dietary fiber, and transplanted the intestinal flora from the feces of Parkinson's disease to another part of the sterile mouse. These rats have symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

The researchers concluded that the gut microbiome is an important driver of Parkinson's disease. Changes in the composition of the gut flora or changes in the gut bacteria itself may contribute to and even worsen motor function, and deterioration of motor function is the main symptom of Parkinson's disease.

The California Institute of Technology microbiologist Sarkis Mazmanian, who is in charge of research, says that for many neurodegenerative diseases, traditional treatments are drugs that work in the brain. The new findings mean that doctors may want to start treating the Parkinson's disease from the intestines, such as regulating short-chain fatty acids, taking probiotics, or removing harmful microbes. New treatment strategies are much easier, safer, and have fewer side effects than existing therapies.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease common in middle-aged and elderly people. The main symptoms include hand and foot tremor, slow movement, and muscle stiffness. The current medical treatment can only alleviate the symptoms, but it can not prevent the disease from developing and can not cure the disease.
