The Moscow Institute of Engineering Physics at the National Institute of Nuclear Energy Research in Russia is studying the application of quantum dots in biomedical fields.

Quantum dots (also known as "artificial atoms") are semiconductor crystals that are very small in size and are also a type of nanoparticle. The main obstacle to their introduction into the human body is that they are toxic to living cells. Russian scientists keep these particles at a size of 2.5 nanometers to 5 nanometers so that they can be discharged from the human body by nearly 100%.

Currently, the team is working on a drug delivery vehicle project that includes microcapsules containing drugs. There are magnetic silver nanoparticles and radioactive fluorescent quantum dots on the capsule wall. Such quantum dot capsules can illuminate, allowing researchers to record their position, and can also control the particles by means of magnets to move the entire capsule to the location of the tumor. With varying magnetic or ultrasonic waves, it can be made hot and turned on when they reach their target.

The team plans to start producing a complete line of devices that can detect more pathogens at the same time after 2019. They can determine a series of infections based on only one air sample. (Technology Daily)
